New Year; Same Traditions

New Years is a time to celebrate the coming of a new year with your family and friends. The Holiday isn’t always celebrated the same each year. Many families do a variety of different activities every year. Seventh grader, Amelia Olivas, shared how this year will differ from the last.

“Last year, we just hung out at our house, but this year we’re going to Europe.”

Some people enjoy eating special foods during New Years. Eighth grader, Gabe Watts, shared his favorite New Years food.

“I like eating cabbage and black eyed peas”, Watts said. “They give good luck.”

Families have traditions that differ from others. Seventh grader, Amelia Olivas, shared what traditions she celebrates.

“My family watches the New Year’s Eve Times Square Ball Drop,” Olivas said. “We watch it every year.”

The New Years Time Square Ball Drop is a popular event held in New York City every year and broadcasted on TV. Watts shared his position on the festivity.

“We watch it,” Watts said. “Just not the whole time.”

Some people see their extended family over the holidays. Seventh grader, Marcelo Canepa, explained which family he saw over the holiday.

“I saw my mom’s side of the family,” Canepa said. “They live in Brownsville, Texas.”

Some people go on vacation over the New Year. Olivas shared the destination for her vacation.

People don’t necessarily need to leave home to see friends and family. Watts shared this year’s visiting plan.

“I’m staying home,” Watts said. “But, we have people coming from Australia.”

On New Years Eve, some families stay up until midnight to enjoy the countdown to the New Year together. Watts shared why he stays up until the countdown.

“I normally stay up because it’s not that late,” Watts said. “It’s also fun.”

Another New Year’s tradition is the making of resolutions, which in this case, means to have a promise to yourself to do something differently in the next year that makes you a better person. New Year’s resolutions can range from dieting to getting better grades, and many things inbetween. Canepa shared his 2019 New Year’s resolution.

“My New Year’s resolution is to learn more Spanish,” Canepa said. “Because my family speaks Spanish.”

New Years is a holiday full of family, celebration, and new beginnings. Seventh grader, Reese Nance, shared her favorite things about the holiday.
