Bucks Bring Clucks to Gorzycki
December 4, 2015
Urban Chickens 101 is an excel class that is trying to bring chickens to Gorzycki by raising money. Their goal was to raise $2,000 in two weeks.
The donations they collect will go to building a chicken coop, materials, feed for the chickens, and other maintenance supplies, which requires the most of the $2,000 they raised.
Seventh grader Bella F. explains what a normal day in the class would look like. “We would go outside [to the chickens].” Bella said. “ We would release them into the runway, we would feed them, and interact with them.
The coop for the chickens will be built by Benny Slater’s excel class, when they have all the materials. When the coop is built, it will be placed in the outdoor learning center. Seventh grader Erin F. hopes that all the chickens will be happy at Gorzycki.
“ [With the donations] we’re gonna build the coop, buy the chickens and the rest of the money will be for maintenance, food and water,” Erin said. “Taking care of the chickens is a lot of work and you have to be prepared.”
The first batch of chickens that the class will receive are day old chicks that they ship overnight, and the class is hoping the second batch will be born here. Seventh grader Kade J. hopes that they will get a good coop for the chickens.
“[In the class so far] we’ve learned about species of chickens, and there is over [hundreds of ] species.” Kade said. “I didn’t know much about chickens and I wanted to learn about them. [The class] sounded interesting.”
Brandi Young, the teacher of the excel class first got chickens when she was in Seventh grade. Four years ago she was able to raise chickens again.
“Well chickens are a big part of my life, and raising chickens is a big experience,” Young said. “It is fun to have pets that make you breakfast and I wanted to bring the experience to the students of Gorzycki.”
