History Comes Alive through “Hamilton”

“Hamilton, an American musical” is a popular Broadway show about the life of founding father and outspoken federalist Alexander Hamilton.
Since “Hamilton” came out, it has become very popular and has made people more interested in history and our founding fathers.
“I like that it shows history in a fun way and it’s not straight from a textbook. It’s more interesting,” Sixth grader Eva D. said.
Eighth grader Laine S. has a connection to Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of “Hamilton.”
“I like Lin-Manuel Miranda because he is a genius,” Laine said. “He’s a very smart and happy person and he wrote me a letter back. Also the music itself just calms me.”
Since the musical is sold out, people sell their tickets for more than what they originally got them for. The average price for the tickets on resale is about $750.
“I have not gone to the musical but it would be amazing if I went,” eighth grader Grace M. said. “It’s probably not going to happen though since it’s very expensive.”
Seventh grader Daniel B. wishes that the theater department’s New York trip included tickets to see “Hamilton.”
“I really want to go, but the tickets sell out really fast and my only chance to go would be on the school trip, but the tickets are all sold out,”Daniel said.
Eighth grade U.S. History teacher Melissa Prepster was able to see Hamilton when it first opened up on Broadway.
“I just think the whole way it comes together is great, with the music, choreography, and characters,”Prepster said. “There were a couple of moments where I was ugly crying, you really feel the weight, the tragedy of it all.”
Adler doesn’t listen to the later songs because they get too sad.
“In the later songs, he cheats on his wife and other sad things happen,” Adler said. “I just enjoy the first few songs more.”
Prepster thinks the musical has made an impact on learning.
“It has certainly made my job easier because people are more into history,” Prepster said.
