Five Feet Apart Takes to the Theater

Five feet apart is produced by CBS films. It is a PG-13 drama romance that was released on March 15th. Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson play Will and Stella, two Cystic Fibrosis patients that fall in love but must stay “five feet apart” for each others safety. Eighth grader, Chloe Lee, shared her opinions about the plot.

“I think the plot of the movie was really good,” Lee said. “But, it was really sad, and there were some unnecessary, sad parts that just made me cry more.”

Eighth grader, Luc Schneider, had a different opinion on the plot of the movie.

“It was ok,” Schneider said. “Interesting I guess, but kind of predictable.”

The movie has a 52% rating on Rotten Tomato and has grown popular over the last week. Lee explained how she would review Five Feet Apart.

“I would give it a four and a half out of five stars,” Lee said. “Because it made me cry too much, and I laughed a lot. It was just giving me mixed signals.”

The movie has been playing in many movie theatres around Austin since it came out. Eighth grader, Bella Steinbrink, explained if the movie deserves the popularity it has been getting.

“Yes, I see why it would be as popular as it was,” Steinbrink said. “It’s a pretty basic romance movie, and people seem to like that.”

Many reviews have called the movie cliche, corny, or basic. Lee explained if she agrees or if she would change anything about the movie.

“I just wish that Po, the guy from the first 45 minutes [of the movie], didn’t die,” Lee said. “Because that wasn’t needed, and it was so sad.”

Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson both acted in the movie as two characters in love with very rare diseases that make it hard for them to interact. Lee described if the actors did a good job of portraying the characters.

“I think the actors did pretty well,” Lee said. “They showed emotion and cried, but they also didn’t because their crying was really ugly.”

Steinbrink shared her different opinion on the actors’ performances.

“They are both talented,” Steinbrink said. “But, I don’t know if it was their best performance.”

Among the Gorzycki students that have seen the movie, most of them say it was “sad” or “they cried”. Lee described whether or not she cried during the movie.

“I cried so much. Right from the get-go, I was sobbing,” Lee said. “I cried so loud that the people around me would turn and stare at me.”

Schneider had a different experience when watching the movie.

“I didn’t cry,” Schneider said. “I don’t cry in movies, and it wasn’t that sad.”

Five feet apart is PG-13 and very popular among students at our school. Steinbrink explained who she would recommend the movie to.

“People who like sad movies,” Steinbrink said. “And romance movies.”

Lee shared her similar recommendation.

“I recommend it to girls who like to cry,” Lee said. “I feel like some people, especially guys, would just make fun of it.”
