A Hunter’s Way Of Life

As deer hunting season in Texas approached in late October and ended in mid January, some people at Gorzycki spent their free time hunting. Many have mixed opinions on hunting, but here at GMS a lot of students and teachers enjoy it.
Seventh grader Cade U. goes hunting almost every weekend with his brother and dad.
“One time I was fishing and when I reeled in a fish I threw it up in the air, my brother shot it mid-air,” Cade said.
Seventh grader Abby M. is also a regular hunter.
“I was at a ranch and my grandpa took the gun to take a shot,” Abby said. “He missed by a lot and accidentally shot something, when we went to take a closer look we saw that he had shot a cow.”
Hunting can involve bows, guns, and knives, all of which can be very dangerous. If they’re not being careful, people can get seriously hurt. Teacher Todd Kagan and officer Nicole B. also love to hunt, their stories assure everyone that they still need to stay safe.
“One time a friend of mine was crossing the fence and dropped their gun,” Todd said. “Even though we do that so often, mistakes can always happen. The gun went off when it fell and someone could’ve gotten hurt or killed.”
Nicole had a scary experience while hunting as well, her story also proves that paying attention to details is mandatory while hunting.
“I was in a 40 foot tripod and when I went to reach for my bow I fell out.” Luckily, Nicole was okay, but she said it taught her a lesson.
Being able to hunt takes patience, skill, and persistence. When hunting, most people use camouflage. If the animal sees the hunter, it will run away and the hunter will lose its kill. When a deer is killed, it is counted for by its number of points. When a deer has a high number of points, it’s considered a great kill.
“My best kill was last year I got a 14
A Hunter’s Way of Lifepoint buck and a 12 point axis deer,” Nicole said.
Todd  explains his best hunt. “I was in South Texas, and I shot a 14 point mule deer at 200 yards.” As for students, Abby’s  best kill was a 13 point buck.
Although lots of people like hunting, some are also against it. Students have different points of view on the issue.
“It’s the way I was raised, but it’s not for everyone.” Abby said.
Todd  explains his opinion on the people who don’t believe in hunting.
“That’s ok, that is what this country is about. I will continue to do it, but people can have their own opinion,” Todd said.
Some people hunt for trophy, which means they hunt to taxidermy their game. Other people hunt for food, and use the meat they kill to feed their family.
“So hunting isn’t for everyone,” Nicole explains. “For me it’s a way of life. I hunt, I eat, and I provide for my family.”
