Lick is an ice cream company in Austin known for their unique flavors. Some of their most unique flavors include strawberries and cream, Texas sheet cake, and goat cheese with thyme and honey.  Lick’s primary goal is to offer “honest ice creams” made from fresh and wholesome  ingredients from local farmers and artisans. The first store was opened six years ago and there are currently three locations in Austin.

“When you compare Lick  to something like Austin Scoops, Lick  definitely stands out,”  sixth grader Trey E. said. “Places like Austin Scoops are much more mainstream since they have more common flavors, but Lick is different from all of the other ice cream places .”

All of Lick’s  sauces, syrups, and cakes are made from  scratch.  They are committed to using non-artificial flavors or colors, and never use high fructose corn syrup or preservatives. All of the milk and cream that goes into their ice cream is from a family-owned dairy farm in Central Texas that supports non-GMO products.

“I think that since the ingredients are sourced locally and no pesticides are used it makes a major difference in the quality,” eighth grader Alyssa S. said. “It’s great that they use fresher ingredients because I think people should pay more attention to where their  food is coming from. Even though the prices are a little high the ingredients make it worth it.”

Austin is known to be the home of many weird and uncommon things. Many people think Lick definitely fits in as one of the city’s many quirks, and has grown in popularity over the years.

“ I think that since Lick is kind of out of the ordinary, people become more interested in trying it,”seventh grader Emilia D. said. “People don’t want to go to the same place and get the same exact thing every time, it just becomes boring. When you try something new and different it’s kind of exciting, and I think a lot of people have had that experience with Lick.  ”

Since the company’s opening, Lick has expanded to selling ice creams nationwide. Recently, the company has added a feature on their website to allow people who may not be near one of their locations to enjoy their ice cream. Customers can order pints of ice cream online and have them shipped directly to their home.

“I think that it’s a really cool concept,” seventh grader Kristyn M. said. “Not very many companies offer that to their customers, so for Lick to come up with that idea and be able to ship their ice cream anywhere in the U.S is a really interesting concept that I think will be really successful.”

Lick is known for  trying to make their customers feel at home in their stores and give their locations a homemade, small town vibe.

“One of my favorite things about lick is the atmosphere,” Alyssa said. “Its really cute and cozy and the locations that I have been to are a little small, so it doesn’t seem really overwhelming and crazy despite how many people are usually there. It just has a chill vibe and a really fun place to hang out and eat your ice cream.”

Although there are multiple locations in Austin, the location near South Congress tends to attract the most customers. After spending the  day downtown, people who want ice cream will  turn straight to Lick.

“I go to lick with my family a lot whenever we‘re downtown ,” Emilia said. “Lick is a really fun place to go to and  it fits in well with the rest of downtown Austin because of its fun, vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great way to end the day .”
